1. Plaza principal
Uno de los lugares más emblemáticos de este municipio es su gran Plaza mayor o plaza principal, con una extensión de 14.000 m2, es considerada como la más grande de Colombia. En su centro, se erige una pila que, en época de la Colonia constituyó una fuente importante de agua para el municipio. En la actualidad se celebran grandes eventos culturales como el Festival del Viento y de las Cometas, en agosto; el Festival de las Luces, en diciembre; y es el lugar de encuentro de sus pobladores.
2. Iglesia Parroquial
Construido en 1604, este templo conserva la arquitectura de ciudades como Granada y Sevilla, de estilo barroco colonial, usada en la construcción de catedrales y basílicas. Gran parte de los cuadros expuestos en este templo fueron diseñados por el artista Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos, considerado el mejor pintor neogranadino de la época.
3. Casa de Antonio Ricaurte
En la actualidad, en sus instalaciones funciona el Museo de la Fuerza Aérea Colombiana FAC, en honor a su patrón, San Mateo.
4. Santuario de Flora y Fauna de Iguaque
Ubicado a 15 km de Villa de Leyva y a 39 km de Tunja, este vasto territorio está compuesto por un ecosistema de páramo y de bosque de niebla en el que propios y visitantes realizan caminatas ecológicas a través de senderos de interpretación distribuidos por el Santuario. El principal atractivo es el ascenso a la laguna de Iguaque, rodeada de frailejones, con una duración aproximada de tres horas el recorrido.
Para los Muiscas, antiguos pobladores de esta región, éste era el lugar desde donde sus dioses los protegían y representaba la cuna sagrada del agua, el origen de la humanidad. Fue allí donde una hermosa mujer, conocida como Bachué, en compañía de un niño que lleva de la mano, comienzan la tarea de poblar el mundo. Al finalizar, regresan a la laguna, convertidos en dos serpientes que se sumergen al interior, para nunca más salir.
El parque entre sus servicios, ofrece alojamiento en cabañas y camping en el sitio conocido como Furachiogua, que en muisca significa “mujer buena”.
5. Museo e Iglesia del Carmen
Fundada por la Orden de Carmelitas Descalzos en 1971, esta edificación conserva la mayor colección de arte religioso del país, con obras que datan de los siglos XVII al XX.
Con un estilo andaluz, está constituida por dos capillas, una de ellas conocida como “Iglesia Mamá Linda” y la otra, erigida en honor a la Virgen del Carmen. Fue construida en el año 1645.
6. Cascada la Periquera
Ubicada a 13 km de Villa de Leyva, por la vía que comunica con Gachantivá, estas cascadas se originan en el río la Cebada y constituyen un atractivo natural visitado por muchos turistas que buscan en sus caídas de 15 m aproximadamente diversión y entretenimiento. Caminatas por las alrededores, recorridos en bicicleta, y camping, son algunas de las actividades que se pueden realizar en este lugar.
7. Casa de don Juan de Castellanos
Este artista fue el escritor de más de 150.000 versos en los que describía las luchas vividas por los indígenas
8. La Real Fábrica de Licores
Conocida también como la primera fábrica de destilaciones del Nuevo Reino de Granada.
9. Museo Paleontológico
Exhibe una completa exposición de fósiles y vestigios animales y vegetales que habitaron la región hace 130 millones de años como: saurios marinos, invertebrados y diferentes especies de plantas. Se encuentra ubicado a las afueras de Villa de Leyva, por la vía que comunica con el municipio de Arcabuco, en el molino de trigo más antiguo del país.
10. Gondava
Ubicado en la vía que conduce a Sutamarchán, este parque temático, conocido como el “Gran valle de los dinosaurios” es ideal para que grandes y chicos conozcan el mundo de estos animales que habitaron el territorio millones de años atrás. Entre sus atracciones, se encuentra una colección de 30 tipos de dinosaurios, algunos de ellos construidos a escala real, interactivos y con movimiento. Los visitantes pueden realizar el recorrido a través de senderos interpretativos o en botes en una reserva de agua, en la que se encuentran las especies acuáticas. El parque cuenta con zonas de excavación simulada, salas de cine 3D, tecnología animatrónica y actividades recreativas y educativas.
OTROS ATRACTIVOS
Claustro de San Agustín
Fundado en 1590, es el claustro más antiguo de Villa de Leyva. En sus instalaciones han funcionado colegios y comunidades religiosas, como la Orden de Santa Catalina de Siena y la primera comunidad de Dominicas de Colombia. En la actualidad es la sede del Instituto de Investigaciones y Recursos Biológicos Alexander Von Humboldt. Se encuentra ubicado en el costado oriental del Parque Ricaurte.
Casa donde murió Antonio Nariño
Este lugar fue escogido por el precursor de los derechos humanos y la independencia, como cuna y lecho de muerte el 13 de diciembre de 1823.
Villa de Leyva es un destino ideal, no solo para conocer su historia, patrimonio y arqueología, también lo es para la práctica de actividades ecoturísticas como caminatas ecológicas, cabalgatas, canyoning, rappel, espeleología, ciclopaseos, gracias a la diversidad de paisajes y atractivos al interior y los alrededores de la ciudad.
Granja de avestruces
Este lugar, adecuado para el agroturismo, constituye un lugar de crianza para las aves más grandes del mundo, los avestruces, en el que los visitantes pueden interactuar con estos animales, además de deleitarse con los productos hechos con su carne, como chorizos, filetes, pinchos y hamburguesas, en el restaurante. Está ubicado en la vía a Santa Sofía.
El Fósil
Con el descubrimiento del cronosario, Kronosaurus Boyacensis Hampe, reptil marino de cinco metros de longitud y 110 millones de años, encontrado en este territorio, se construyó el Museo el Fósil, para dar a conocer a los visitantes los diferentes vestigios animales y vegetales que habitaron la región en eras del Mesozóico y Cretácico, cuando ésta hacía parte de un extenso mar interno. Se encuentra ubicado a 5km de Villa de Leyva, por la carretera que conduce a Santa Sofía.
Infiernito - Parque Arqueológico de Moniquirá
Aproximadamente a 5 km de Villa de Leyva, por la vía a Santa Sofía, se ubica este atractivo, constituido por un centenar de columnas grandes y pequeñas, talladas en piedra y alineadas de oriente a occidente, con formas fálicas, símbolo de fertilidad. Era utilizado como observatorio astronómico de los Muiscas, tiene más de 2200 años de antigüedad.
Cuevas de la fábrica
Por la vía que comunica a Villa de Leyva con Santa Sofía, a 20 km, se encuentra esta cueva, Ideal para la práctica de espeleología. Está habitada por pequeños murciélagos. Al tener poca humedad, no hay un número significativo de estalactitas.
