Terrestre
La Troncal del Caribe es la vía más importante que comunica a Santa Marta con ciudades como Riohacha, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Ciénaga, a excepción de Valledupar.
Desde el interior del país, se llega a Santa Marta a través de la Troncal del Magdalena, tomando el desvío al norte en el cruce de Ciénaga.
Desde Bogotá, se puede tomar la carretera Bogotá- Honda- Puerto Boyacá- San Alberto- Bosconia- la Ye de Ciénaga y Santa Marta. Peajes: 10. Distancia: 964 km
También la vía Bogotá- Tunja- Bucaramanga- San Alberto- Bosconia- la Ye de Ciénaga. Peajes: 16. Distancia: 959 km.
Desde Medellín: Vía Medellín Caucasia.
La terminal de transportes de Santa Marta se encuentra ubicada al sur de la ciudad. Desde allí se pueden tomar buses a destinos nacionales e intermunicipales.

En la ciudad, la forma más fácil y práctica de transportarse es en taxis, que recorren distancias cortas con precios fijos. Sin embargo, es importante preguntar el costo de la carrera con anterioridad. También es usual el uso de buses o busetas.
Aérea
El aeropuerto Simón Bolívar de Santa Marta está localizado a 20 km al sur de la ciudad, a donde llegan vuelos nacionales desde las principales ciudades del país, o en conexión, así como vuelos internacionales. Desde el aeropuerto se pueden tomar taxis o buses que lo comunican con la Santa Marta, en una duración de 25 minutos aproximadamente.

En la actualidad algunas rutas de cruceros por el Mar Caribe hacen escala en el puerto de Santa Marta, entre los meses de octubre y mayo. El puerto se encuentra ubicado en el costado noroccidental de la ciudad, en uno de los extremos de la Bahía de Santa Marta.
