Ciudad capital del departamento del Cauca, ubicada entre la cordillera Occidental y Central, al suroccidente del país. Popayán ha sido siempre reconocida por ser una de las ciudades de mayor antigüedad y mejor conservación del país, reflejándose en sus construcciones, arquitectura y las tradiciones religiosas. Los payaneses siempre han tratado de cuidar la tradición centenaria, tanto en arquitectura, como en costumbres.

Las procesiones y tradiciones que allí se muestran, son conocidas a nivel mundial, ya que fueron constituidas por los colonizadores españoles, con todas las características típicas de la iglesia católica. Esta característica se ve reflejada en los dos reconocimientos recibidos por la UNESCO, los cuales son:

La ciudad también es llamada “Ciudad Blanca”, debido a que, la mayoría de las casas y edificios públicos fueron pintados de color blanco. Mientras eran pintadas y reconstruidas las casas, se encontraron murales y pinturas que reflejaban momentos históricos y que quedaron al descubierto luego de un terremoto ocurrido en 1983.

Curiosidades y tips

  • Popayán ha recibido el nombre de “Ciudad Blanca”, ya que casi en su totalidad ha sido pintada de éste color, en especial su centro histórico.
  • Popayán tiene el título de “Ciudad de la Gastronomía” otorgado por la Unesco, en el año 2005.
  • La Semana Santa que se celebra en esta ciudad, tiene el título de Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial, otorgado por la Unesco en el año 2009. Es considerada como una de las celebraciones tradicionales más antiguas de Colombia.
  • Si desea realizar compras de artesanías o dulces típicos de la región, se recomienda visitar el centro histórico de la ciudad, ya que cuenta con grandes centros comerciales, como el Campanario; también se pueden realizar compras en pueblos cercanos como Patojo.
