La Guajira ofrece la posibilidad de observar una interacción armoniosa entre el hombre y la naturaleza, a través de las distintas comunidades que habitan en su territorio, los Kogui, Arhuacos, y Wiwas en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta  y los Wayúu en la parte peninsular; además sus características geográficas brindan un conjunto de escenarios que contrastan entre sí -desierto, playas y montañas- lo que permite que los visitantes puedan disfrutar de actividades en donde están presenten elementos étnicos y naturales.

Al recorrer La Guajira, los visitantes podrán vivir un viaje de diferentes experiencias, ya sea experimentando la adrenalina generada por deportes de aventura como el kitesurf; recorriendo paisajes naturales y apreciando los ecosistemas de la zona; conociendo las tradiciones de comunidades indígenas o simplemente disfrutando del sol y las playas de arena blanca y calmadas aguas. 

Curiosidades y tips

  • El nombre de Maicao proviene del vocablo en lengua en lagua wayuunaiki que significa ojo de maíz.
  • Es bueno y recomendable realizar las actividades en la compañía de un guía nativo con experiencia, no sólo cuando se va de Riohacha al Cabo de la Vela, sino para ir a otros destinos de La Guajira como el Parque Nacional Natural Serranía de la Macuira.
  • Los recorridos se deben hacer en camionetas 4 X 4, dadas las condiciones geográficas del departamento.
  • Se recomienda que los viajeros lleven  dinero en efectivo para realizar los gastos de su viaje, ya que el servicio de cajeros electrónicos sólo está disponible en Riohacha y Uribia.
  • Al degustar los platos de la gastronomía local, se invita a los visitantes a elegir preparaciones que no sean elaboradas a base de carne de tortuga ya que su conservación debe ser cuidada, para así poder disfrutar en el futuro de este animal en su ambiente natural.
  • Se recomienda que quienes deseen tomarse una foto con los miembros de las comunidades indígenas, primero les pidan permiso para hacerlo.
  • Recuerde que tanto en el Cabo de la Vela como en la región de la Alta Guajira no se cuenta con servicios públicos.
  • Debido al clima característico del departamento de La Guajira, los visitantes deben llevar ropa de algodón y mantenerse hidratados; así mismo se sugiere llevar un gorro y bloqueador solar para protegerse de los rayos del sol.
